<p><b>Melvich</b>, <a href="Schottisch-g%C3%A4lische_Sprache" title="Schottisch-gälische Sprache">schottisch-gälisch</a>: <b>A’ Mhealbhaich</b>,<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> ist ein <a href="Weiler" title="Weiler">Weiler</a> in der <a href="Schottland" title="Schottland">schottischen</a> <a href="Unitary_Authority" title="Unitary Authority">Council Area</a> <a href="Highland_(Council_Area)" title="Highland (Council Area)">Highland</a>. Er liegt in der <a href="Traditionelle_Grafschaften_Schottlands" title="Traditionelle Grafschaften Schottlands">traditionellen Grafschaft</a> beziehunsgweise <a href="Verwaltungsgrafschaften_Schottlands" title="Verwaltungsgrafschaften Schottlands">Verwaltungsgrafschaft</a> <a href="Sutherland" title="Sutherland">Sutherland</a>. Melvich ist etwa 23 Kilometer westlich von <a href="Thurso" title="Thurso">Thurso</a> und 50 Kilometer nordwestlich von <a href="Wick_(Schottland)" title="Wick (Schottland)">Wick</a> an der Mündung des <a href="Halladale_River" title="Halladale River">Halladale River</a> in die <a href="Melvich_Bay" title="Melvich Bay">Melvich Bay</a>. Im Nordwesten geht Melvich in den Nachbarweiler Portskerra über.<sup id="cite_ref-humberrich_2-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-humberrich-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Geschichte">Geschichte</h2></div>
<p>In der Umgebung von Melvich finden sich verschiedene Spuren historischer Besiedlung. Hierzu zählen ein <a href="Steinzeit" title="Steinzeit">steinzeitliches</a> <a href="Cairn_(Steinh%C3%BCgel)#Cairns_der_Britischen_Inseln" title="Cairn (Steinhügel)">Kammergrab</a><sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>, in dessen Nähe ein <a href="Bronzezeit" title="Bronzezeit">bronzezeitliches</a> Bronzebeil gefunden wurde<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>. Die bis 1909 beschriebenen Reste eines <a href="Broch_(Turm)" title="Broch (Turm)">Brochs</a> am Südrand Melvichs wurden vermutlich in der Folgezeit durch die Feldwirtschaft so beschädigt, dass heute nur noch einzelne Steine vorliegen.<sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Am gegenüberliegenden Halladale-Ufer liegen die denkmalgeschützten Reste einer prähistorischen Siedlung, die als Halladale Bridge bezeichnet wird.<sup id="cite_ref-6" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Nördlich davon befindet sich das <a href="Herrenhaus_(Geb%C3%A4ude)" title="Herrenhaus (Gebäude)">Herrenhaus</a> <a href="Bighouse" title="Bighouse">Bighouse</a>, welches der <a href="Clan_MacKay" title="Clan MacKay">Clan MacKay</a> vermutlich in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts errichten ließ.<sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Am Südrand von Melvich, nahe dem Halladale-Ufer wurde an zwei Orten in der Vergangeheit Stein gebrochen.<sup id="cite_ref-8" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-9" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Wurden im Jahre 1871 insgesamt 414 Einwohner in Melvich gezählt, waren es zehn Jahre später bereits 646. Bei Zensuserhebung 1961 lebten 130 Personen in Melvich. Zehn Jahre später war die Einwohnerzahl auf 113 gesunken.<sup id="cite_ref-10" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Auf dem Kartenblatt der <a href="Ordnance_Survey" title="Ordnance Survey">Ordnance Survey</a> aus dem Jahre 1878 sind in Melvich 83 bedachte und zwei unbedachte Gebäude verzeichnet. Das Kartenblatt von 1962 zeigt hingegen 45 bedachte und 33 unbedachte Gebäude.<sup id="cite_ref-11" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-11"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>11<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Die auf der Strecke von <a href="Tain_(Schottland)" title="Tain (Schottland)">Tain</a> nach <a href="John_o%E2%80%99_Groats" title="John o’ Groats">John o’ Groats</a> zahlreiche Weiler entlang der schottischen Nordküste erschließende <a href="A836_road" title="A836 road">A836</a> bildet die Hauptverkehrsstraße Melvichs. Am Ostrand der Ortschaft quert sie auf der im frühen 20. Jahrhundert errichten <i>Halladale Bridge</i> den Halladale River.<sup id="cite_ref-12" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-12"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>12<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Am gegenügerliegenden Halladale-Ufer mündet die aus <a href="Helmsdale_(Schottland)" title="Helmsdale (Schottland)">Helmsdale</a> kommende <a href="A897_road" title="A897 road">A897</a> ein.<sup id="cite_ref-humberrich_2-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-humberrich-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
